Students who prevail often receive scholarships to further their education.
Sometimes students don't need further education, but they deserve a reward. Alex Glotz, an automotive engineering student at the Warren County Career Center, spent two years working and learning from Midtown Motors during the Career Center's Co-op / TANF program.
His working day was interrupted on Tuesday.
He was called to a meeting. Little did he know that he would meet with the owner, the service providers, his parents and his teacher.
Nor did he know that he would accept a scholarship.
Owner Kevin Ruttenbur, Service Director Randy Carlson, Service Director Rich Landman presented Glotz with $ 5,000 - $ 1,000 was in his hands on Tuesday, with another $ 2,000 to follow on his one- and two-year anniversaries.
Glotz looked stunned when he saw the oversized check with $ 5,000 on it and Carlson presented him with the first payment.
"I appreciate very much", he said.
"We are so proud of you" said Alex's mother Mindy.
"You have done that very well" said his father Bill.
"You deserve it, Alex." said Carlson.
"We are running a program through the Career Center for applicants entering the automotive industry", said Ruttenbur. “We offer OEM training. We want to promote our youth in the church. We enjoy watching them grow. And in return we grow. "
John Winkelbauer, Automotive Engineering Teacher at the Career Center, and Bob Smith, Co-op / TANF program coordinator, attended the happy event.
"I couldn't be more proud of him" said Winkelbauer. “I somehow pointed him out to Ford. I'll keep in touch with the Ford dealerships here and in Erie. Ford has an excellent training program after school. "
"I couldn't be happier for him" he said. "He came to the right place."
"I'm grateful to Midtown Ford for the way they worked with us ... with Alex." said blacksmith. “His parents' support meant a lot. It was a team effort. "
Glotz wasted no time and came to the career center rather than the cooperative those days when he was still in school.
“He started with the Ford curriculum and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (Soft Skills) curriculum. He let me run out of material. " said blacksmith. "He is what the program is about."
"I wouldn't be here without the program" said Glotz.
Glotz is the first winner. Midtown plans to turn this into an annual program.
"This is the first scholarship we've ever given at Midtown Motors." said Carlson. “It's so difficult to get technicians. We hope that this is the way. "
"To be eligible, you have to get involved through the Career Center and go through the TANF program." he said. "Here, the scholarship holder must be qualified through professional experience and through the Career Center with reputation and good grades."
"We are looking for motivated and independent children" said Carlson. “We don't have to worry that we will constantly overwhelm them. Alex definitely fulfilled this bill. "
"If he looks through the training history, he has completed over 60 courses - and taught himself how to get better." said Carlson. "We really appreciate that."
"Alex did everything we asked him to do" he said.
Glotz showed his dedication and enthusiasm by quickly leaving the presentation to get back to work.
"I wish more parents would use the existing offers" said Mindy Glotz.
“He's running with it. Now he is unstoppable ", She said. "To reach for the stars."
"I'm so extremely proud of him - everything he has achieved and everything he will achieve." said Bill Glotz. "We are very satisfied with Midtown and the Career Center."
Alex will move from the co-op program to a full-time employee.
He is following in the automotive footsteps of his father and grandfather and Bill expects to spend more time with his son. At least part of the scholarship will help fund the restoration of a 1980 Monte Carlo that Bill had worked on before handing it on to Alex.
"My car will now collapse very quickly" said Alex.
