A temporary reversal for the reflation trade

Image
This is an excerpt from our equity outlook - a temporary reversal What are the risks? Too many incentives in the US can mean that inflation expectations are no longer anchored, forcing the US Federal Reserve to hike key interest rates sharply. However, the markets do not currently reflect such a scenario. The Fed has continued to stress that it is happy with the expected rise in inflation and is in no rush to hike rates. This explains the recent reversal in nominal US bond yields. Medium-term inflation expectations have eased slightly, possibly due to the impact of rising taxes on growth after the debt-driven stimulus. The details of the Biden Administration's broadly defined infrastructure packages will be of critical importance. The size of the expense and the degree to which it is paid through higher corporate and personal taxes or further debt issuance will determine the extent to which bond yields, that is, market rates, will rise. The continuing potential of value stocks...

Stock futures trade flat after indexes set record highs

The stock futures opened barely changed on Monday evening after a record meeting earlier in the day. Investors are waiting for more corporate results from large companies. Contracts on the S&P 500 were just above the flat line after the blue-chip index hit an all-time high on the regular trading day. Dow and Nasdaq futures were hardly changed. Tesla (TSLA) shares fell in late trading after the company's first-quarter sales results fell short of estimates, despite automotive earnings and gross margins beating expectations. The results will rise again on Tuesday. Companies like Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (togetL), and Starbucks (SBUX) are ready to report results. The big tech names reporting Tuesday and later this week are being watched particularly closely. These stocks have largely underperformed the broader market since the start of the year as the 2020 tech and growth rally cooled and investors instead cycled and value stocks. "Except for Google, you get the FAANG ...

Market analysts list potential stocks vulnerable to short sale once trade returns

Stocks that could potentially be removed from Korea's large-cap tracking benchmarks and MSIC index could become initial targets for shot selling once the cap hits May following a 14-month ban that started with Big -Cap issuance begins to be lifted. Selling short enables an investor to take advantage of falling stocks. The practice has been temporarily banned as part of the Covid-19 market since March last year, but is expected to resume on May 3. Stock short sales are typically made by overseas investors, so market experts believe that stocks that have strong overseas net selling or a sudden surge in borrowing could be short selling targets. According to Samsung Securities, from June 2017 to March 2020, offshore investors were 65 percent short in the Kospi market and 73 percent in the Kosdaq market. Samsung Securities selected Lotte Tour Development, Doosan Infracore, Hotel Shilla, Hanjin KAL, Samsung Heavy Industries, Toptec, Partron and BH as likely targets. Some overvalued...
