Task force calls for coordinated global response to ransomware
Ransomware must be prioritized, with coordinated international diplomatic and law enforcement efforts and a carrot-and-stick approach that discourages nation-states from providing safe havens for criminals, according to a report by the ransomware task force released Thursday. The task force of more than 50 people at the San Rafael, California-based Institute for Security and Technology included internet and cybersecurity companies, government agencies, nonprofits, and academic institutions. The chair was Michael Philips, Chief Claims Officer of the Resilience Cyber Insurance Solutions program manager. The 81-page report recommended, among other things, that the US lead by example and conduct "an ongoing, aggressive, government-run intelligence ransomware campaign," coordinated by the White House.
