Fun coding holiday activity for NZ children and teens

What do the following all have in common? Apps, games, email systems, banking systems, fire alarm systems, electric vacuum cleaners, dashboards, coffee machines, washing machines and social media platforms.

The creation of each of these elements involves coding.

This summer, Coding NZ is offering all New Zealand children and teenagers ages 9-18 the opportunity to learn to code in free vacation programs.

Give your child or teen the opportunity to create with technology rather than just consume it by booking them for an activity here. It's fun, engaging, and priceless. With learning opportunities for every level, everyone is welcome, from beginners to advanced. And who knows? An exciting holiday activity that challenges the brain and offers a balancing addition to outdoor summer fun could make your child the next inventor of Google.

Students learn to create websites and games using real programming languages.

Coding NZ, one of the leading private providers of coding classes in New Zealand, was founded by Nikki Trebilco. It takes a fun approach to learning and has tutors available to help students during the free holiday programming activities.

Coding NZ recognizes that computers are sometimes fun and can make others angry (for all ages!) And has taken a strictly "human" approach to providing learning activities. “I tried to remove all obstacles to learning how to program by making it fun and at my own pace, with tutors who help when students get stuck,” explains Trebilco.

No one will argue that different people have different approaches to learning, and Coding NZ's curriculum was designed with that in mind. “The self-determined nature of the curriculum is important as it allows more advanced students to move up quickly - which often allows them to move up well beyond what they could be within the traditional educational system - while other students are able to complete the content go through it slower and be creative with what you learn at every step of the way, "adds Trebilco.

Of course, everyone, including adults, usually starts out as users rather than developers of technology. Our diverse lives include the use of technology both in the workplace and outside, but how many of us could develop the programs we use? When children learn to code, they learn that every game, app, and service was created by someone around them.

Live tutors will be online to assist the students.

“Our curriculum teaches students how to create websites, games and applications using real programming languages, which is a step ahead of the 'scratch / drag and drop' learning that is practiced in many classrooms,” says Trebilco.

Learning to code is invaluable for anyone as it engages multiple regions of the brain. Learning itself helps make better thinkers as learners develop memory, attention, and decision-making skills. Coding is the language people use to tell technology what to do, so learning to code is very similar to learning a new language (something young people excel at).

Notes Trebilco: "While we are teaching programming we obviously have to learn English, physics, math and design, which is a great way for students to learn these important areas in a nice creative space. I wish this program had been available when I was young. "

In fact, programming has become a stellar career choice. It's an increasingly sought-after qualification, with Information Technology having the most up-to-date vacancies in any industry (search 12/13/2021) and programming on Immigration NZ's long-term skills shortage list. The average salary for a software developer is $ 88,000 (MBIE) with plenty of room for upward trends, as evidenced by being the highest paid industry in the TradeMe Salary Manager job for the past 3 consecutive years (even above senior management and the General Management).

Learning to program is valuable in our digital world.

While the Kiwi summer vacation should absolutely consist of sea, sand, sun and enjoying our truly great outdoors, keeping your kids mentally occupied is just as important. For parents looking for a fun educational activity to stimulate the mind and creativity of their child or teen, Coding NZ's free vacation activities are a must. And with tutor support for anyone stuck, you don't have to be a technology expert to watch your child or teen learn to code. "It's exciting to see how students learn to program and know that it develops their creative and logical skills while increasing their chances of success in a digital world," adds Trebilco.

Coding NZ's vacation activities are available Monday, January 17 through Friday, January 21, every day at 4 PM, 5 PM and 6 PM. Parents can book a one-hour coding activity at any of these times. For more information or to book, visit Codingnz.com/holidays.
