Search efforts for Brendan Santo ramp up, including search in Red Cedar River

On November 4, Michigan State University Police and Public Security released an update on missing person Brendan Santo to ensure the community campus is a safe place for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

In Santo's disappearance, no foul play is suspected and MSUPD has received no further reports of missing persons.

Brendan had no intention of harming himself, the statement said.

"There was a lot of misinformation," said Rozman. “I can confirm that there have been no further reports of missing students on campus. I can confirm that we have not received any reports of criminal activity in this regard. ... There is nothing that we have not made available to the public regarding this case. "

On November 2, the MSUPD and the Marine Services Division of Michigan State Police (MSP) conducted a search at Jenison Fieldhouse near the Red Cedar River. The Ingham County Sheriff's Office has also provided assistance with specialized units.

"We are leveraging resources from other state and local law enforcement agencies to step up our search efforts," said MSUPD inspector Chris Rozman.

MSP's Marine Services Division conducts its search operations by boat, using advanced sonar technology in conjunction with the Capital Area Dive Team for this intensive search of the water.

From now on, the search will include searches on foot, by helicopter, drone and boat. Several canines have also been inserted since Saturday.

"The Red Cedar River is of particular interest because of its proximity to where Brendan was last seen," said Rozman. "This particular search effort requires additional resources from MSP's Marine Services Division."

Two miles of the river run through the MSU campus.

The digital forensics and cybercrime division of MSUPD and the technical services division of MSP were also involved in the search.

"Our investigators were diligent in this investigation," said Rozman. “They interviewed everyone who was last seen or spoken to Brendan and they checked security cameras. They also used advanced investigative techniques. You have checked cellular data, smartphone data, GPS data. "

In addition, the data is also checked by the FBI.

"We did not find Brendan's phone and records show no recent activity. We are confident that we have obtained the information available from his digital footprint." Rozman said in an updated press release.

No MSU campus was closed during the search.

"We are asking people to somehow avoid the area," he said. “We cannot completely secure the area. ... We have been very open about what we've done so far. "

Santo was last seen on October 29th and left Yakeley Hall just before midnight. According to an MSUPD press release dated Nov. 1, it is possible Santo intended to walk approximately half a mile to the Brody neighborhood.

Yakeley Hall is located on the north end of the MSU campus, near Michigan Avenue and Grand River Avenue.

Santo wasn't a student at MSU and was visiting friends. However, there is no evidence that he left the East Lansing area. Santo's vehicle was left in the last place it was parked.

He was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, black t-shirt, black baseball cap, and Converse shoes. Santo is 5 feet, 10 inches, and 160 pounds.

“We remain hopeful and at the same time acknowledge that he has been missing for over three days. ... All of our officers and investigators are working very hard to resolve this case, ”said Rozman.

Rozman said investigators would find out where Santo went and what he did. There are no noteworthy clues at this point.

“Right now, our campus is a safe place for our students and employees. We just ask that everyone respect the searches currently being carried out by law enforcement agencies. We keep thinking and praying for Brendan and his family during this time, ”MSU spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said in an email to The State News.

MSUPD remains in close contact with Santo's family. They have been given accommodation near campus while the search operations continue.

The Santo family has encouraged parishioners to keep their eyes peeled and provide advice or information to investigators.

"We understand this has been a worrying time for members of our campus community and beyond, and we appreciate the support of each of you and your individual efforts to raise awareness of our ongoing endeavors," Marlon Lynch, MSU vice president of Das announced public safety in an email.
