Pre-feasibility Study Looking to Progress CO2 Capture


REGINA, Saskatchewan, June 1st, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Enhancing the impact of emissions reductions through carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the focus of a new pre-feasibility study examining the potential application of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture will be 750-megawatt coal-fired power plants. This project is part of a large-scale study investigating the profitability of a regional geological carbon storage center in the southeastern United States. The International CCS Knowledge Center (Knowledge Center), based in Regina, SK Canada, is working with an international team on the US Department of Energy (DOE) funded project to develop conceptual designs and capital cost estimates to evaluate the installation of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture after incineration in a Southern Company electric power station.

The project would represent a significant scale-up and is a natural advance in the maturation of carbon capture technology. By contributing leadership skills, visions and experience based on its key findings from the fully integrated CCS facility Boundary Dam 3 and its comprehensive second generation CCS study (Shand CCS Feasibility Study), the Knowledge Center is conducting the pre-feasibility study on CO2 capture of the scenario. This study is carried out under a cooperation agreement with the project manager Southern States Energy Board and a team that includes Southern Company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group and Stantec Consulting Ltd. belong.

This study is part of the project Establishing early carbon dioxide storage: Project ECO2S as part of a comprehensive initiative of the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory, Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE). CarbonSAFE closes important gaps on the critical path to CCUS deployment by reducing the technical risk, uncertainty and costs of a geological storage complex for more than 50 million tons of CO2 over a period of 30 years from industrial sources.

The pre-feasibility study examines the design and costs of CO2 capture. It will include details such as an analysis of the steam integration options between the generating unit and the capture plant, as well as identifying the potential impact of the new processes on the environmental permit of existing plants. Theoretical installation of CO2 capture systems in power plants would not only ensure reliable base load electricity, but also preserve the value of the existing system while making significant progress in reducing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.
