POS Infrastructure Engineer at Massmart


The POS Engineer (Level 2) is responsible for leading complex projects, technological challenges and leading advanced troubleshooting. The tasks include the planning, implementation, engineering and architecture of the business-critical POS infrastructure

MOST IMPORTANT PERFORMANCE AREAS:
POS system operation and optimization:

  • Ensure the stability and availability of all POS systems.
  • Protect data, software and hardware by coordinating, planning and implementing POS security measures.
  • Complete documentation and standardization of operating procedures with appropriate controls to ensure operational stability; and facilitating infrastructure activities to support ongoing POS publication.
  • Perform system audits.
  • Monitor the performance of the POS infrastructure and minimize network downtime.
  • Participate in the engineering and configuration of POS features that are being deployed or considered.
  • Resolve POS issues and failures, plan upgrades, and collaborate with infrastructure architects.
  • Providing 3rd Line Support - Collaborate with project management teams, third line engineers, and service desk engineers on a regular basis.
  • Dealing with escalations of unsolved complex problems.
  • Maintaining resilience of the POS infrastructure and planning disaster recovery for POS services.

Service management:

  • Manage capacity utilization and service delivery by:
  • Ensure that customer expectations and services provided are managed in relation to existing Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Identify ways to automate repetitive tasks and reduce call volume, save time, and improve overall service offerings
  • Implement projects in accordance with agreed guidelines, ensure that all project deadlines are met
  • Facilitate communication with POS systems support teams, including troubleshooting equipment and software problems.
  • Monitor technical support delivery and track open technical support tickets.

Cost management:

  • Enter inputs into the financial plan and budget for the POS infrastructure
  • Carrying out cost-benefit and return-on-investment analyzes for proposed systems to support management in implementation decisions
  • Negotiations and contracts with consultants, technical staff and providers of services and products
  • Control project cost variances by ensuring that:
  • Project costs are managed against time and resource allocations
  • Create cost variance reports for reporting and tracking purposes

Personnel Management:

  • Coach and build the capacity of the support team members through mentoring and assistance with performance planning and evaluation.
  • Constantly strive to develop the skills and knowledge of yourself and others; for example sharing reference material; Presentation in innovation and team training, etc.

Strategic planning:

  • Manage the POS assets and software lifecycle roadmap to ensure support and license compliance - annually with a 1-2 year forecast.
  • Participate in the formulation of the POS infrastructure strategy with a 3-year look at assets, standardization and technology transformation.

Planning horizon:

  • Responsible for the POS standards and tactical plans to ensure operational stability and innovation.
  • Develop standards and tactical plans to ensure operational stability and innovation (1-3 years).
  • Research, formulate and deliver technical solutions to increase efficiency
  • Get involved in formulating the POS infrastructure strategy.
  • Manage and design the POS infrastructure services provided through multi-year contracts with strategic vendors.

WORKPLACE REQUIREMENTS:
At least academic, professional qualifications and experience required for this position:

  • Academic qualifications and certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or national diploma in computer science, information technology, management information technology, systems engineering or a comparable qualification.

Advanced Technology Certification in Network Technology:

Additional certification would be an advantage, but not mandatory:

  • Supplier management and negotiating skills; and
  • ITIL Foundation certification.
  • Years of work experience: 7-10 years of work experience, of which at least 3 to 5 years at senior engineer level or higher.

Has knowledge and experience in:

  • Job description workbook page 5.
  • Manage a POS infrastructure environment with 400-1000+ POS devices in hundreds of locations.
  • Linux and Slepos.
  • Experience in technical editing for the documentation of processes and procedures.
