New Video Offers In-Depth Look At Tesla Energy

There is a close connection between electric vehicles and renewable energy, and that connection - both literally and symbolically - runs right through the power grid. Intermittent energy sources like sun and wind need on-grid storage to be profitable, and the most flexible and scalable type of storage is a battery, which happens to be the core technology behind electric vehicles. Thus, advances in battery technology and the expansion of battery manufacturing have applications for two very different industries.

Tesla understood this early in the game - in 2015 it launched Tesla Energy, a division that offers stationary storage batteries for residential (Powerwall), commercial (Powerpack) and large-scale (Megapack) applications. Elon Musk has repeatedly said that Tesla Energy could one day grow bigger than Tesla's auto business.

That hasn't happened yet, but Tesla's energy business is growing rapidly. In its fourth quarter 2020 conference call, the company announced that battery usage increased 83% in 2020, largely due to sales of the megapack to utility companies. And the potential for further expansion is enormous - Grand View Research estimates that grid-scale battery storage will become a $ 15 billion market by 2027. In Tesla's earnings call for the first quarter of 2021, Musk predicted that the move to electric cars will double electricity demand. and the transition to electrical heating systems for buildings will triple it. "This is a bright future for both Tesla and the utilities," he said.

Unlike electric cars, utility-scale energy storage has not been discussed much in the press - except perhaps in Australia, which has suffered several embarrassing power outages in recent years. A rapid expansion of solar energy, made possible by massive battery farms from Tesla and others, brings the problem under control.

The recent Texas cold snap, which resulted in widespread power outages, brought energy storage to the American evening news. California, too, has been grappling with blackouts and other electricity issues recently, and CNBC explains why stationary storage is needed to keep the modern grid running.

Storage is not just about enabling renewable energies - it is also an important tool for ensuring grid reliability, balancing out power peaks and preventing sudden surges that can overload local distribution grids. David Bissell, the CEO of the local utility on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where Tesla built a huge storage system in 2017, tells CNBC that batteries are "amazing" at balancing energy supply and demand because they can respond instantly to imbalances. “We had our best reliability ever last year,” he says.

Tesla isn't the only player in energy storage - venerable electronics giants like Toshiba, Siemens, Panasonic, General Electric and ABB, as well as utilities like NextEra Energy, are also claiming portions of what turns out to be a big and lucrative pie.

The demand for storage is driven both from below and above - governments around the world are calling for energy storage as part of their strategies to modernize electricity grids. China has made storage part of its plan to get 16.5% of its energy from solar and wind by 2025. California launched a major energy storage program in 2014. The Biden government's energy plan includes investments of US $ 100 billion to modernize the network. including storage.

For companies that can quickly participate in the transformation of the global power grid, this looks like a prosperous future indeed.
