Apple macOS Monterey: A look at all the new features

Apple announced new software updates for most of its devices at WWDC 2021, including macOS Monterey, the new operating system update that will power Macs, iMacs, and MacBooks. New features in macOS Monterey include Universal Control, which lets users rely on a single trackpad or keyboard on multiple devices running macOS Monterey, and AirPlay to Mac, which lets them control everything from an iPhone to one Mac device can play. Everything here is new with macOS Monterey.

Universal control

The first feature on macOS Monterey that Apple revealed is all about input. With Universal Control, users can rely on a single mouse / trackpad and keyboard on two or three devices. These can be MacBooks, iMacs, or even iPads. This is especially useful if one of those devices is a MacBook, so users can use the MacBook trackpad on their iMac and iPad pro without using any other input device.

Universal Control also allows users to quickly transfer files between these multiple devices via a simple drag-and-drop image. So if you are editing a video on your iMac and you have a custom watermark on your iPad, you can drag the file from the iPad all the way to the iMac and drop it right into the video editing tool.

AirPlay on Mac

Users can now share their screen from an iPhone or iPad to a device running macOS Monterey to share all kinds of content on the bigger screen. Additionally, users who share their screen with an iMac via AirPlay can also use the device's built-in speakers to play audio.

Apple's Shortcuts app is now available on Macs thanks to macOS Monterey. Shortcuts allow users to set up quick automated specific actions that are triggered when they select a shortcut. A new shortcut editor allows users to quickly create and edit shortcuts, and the app also integrates much deeper into macOS, now appearing in Spotlight, Finder and supporting multitasking and the menu bar.

Apple has also stated that Automator will continue to be supported on macOS Monterey and users will be able to import their Automator workflows into shortcuts as they wish.

New Safari features

With the new update, Apple has also revised its Safari browser. Safari now has a new minimalist tab design that shows the full address when you tap the tab itself, and users can then search right from there. There is also a customizable theme for Safari that allows each tab to take on completely the color of the webpage you are visiting.

Tab groups can now also be found in the redesigned sidebar. The feature allows users to group tabs more efficiently without cluttering them and becoming a productivity hurdle. Each tab group can have its own set of tabs, and a tab group can be customized to set up for work, travel, shopping, or other use cases. Tab groups are also synced with other devices such as your MacBook.

Other new functions

Apple also added support for its new updated map view on macOS Monterey, as well as the Live Text feature, which uses machine learning on the device to recognize text in photos, including phone numbers, websites, addresses, and tracking numbers for users to copy can paste and, make a call, open a website and find more information easily.

Monterey also provides support for spatial audio on M1-powered devices when used with the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Meanwhile, new accessibility features allow anyone to add alternate image descriptions directly from markup, and improved full keyboard access and new cursor customization options provide more flexibility when navigating the Mac.
