Memorial Day weekend travel sets 2021 record at LAX

LAX is preparing for Memorial Day weekend getaway

Memorial Day weekend is considered one of the busiest travel weekends of the year by travel experts and airport officials.

Memorial Day weekend travelers have already set a new record for 2021 at Los Angeles International Airport. Airport officials said more than 78,000 people passed the Transportation Security Administration on Friday alone.

With travel plans long delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 37 million people were expected to travel from May 27 to May 31. This represents a 60% increase over the previous year's record low of 23 million American Automobile Association travelers.

Even before the holidays, May was the busiest month in LAX since early 2020 before the pandemic broke out. An average of 61,400 passengers pass through security checks every day. That's only about half of the passenger traffic from the same period in 2019, but airport officials said it was still significantly higher than during the
Pandemic and increasing every week.

LAX officials said the terminals were manned and on Sunday they reminded travelers to arrive two hours early to make sure they don't miss their flight.

Memorial Day Weekend: LAX officials warn of increasing passenger traffic

Los Angeles International Airport officials warned Wednesday that terminals are likely to be full over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend and travelers should plan ahead.

"We're seeing passenger numbers grow rapidly as the demand for air travel in the US increases, so we want to make sure our guests know they are returning to an airport that is full of travelers and with heavy traffic at times," said Justin Erbacci, CEO of Los Angeles World

Airports, the city agency that oversees LAX, said earlier this week. "LAX is ready and excited to welcome our guests back to a safe and clean airport with new technology and amenities that deliver a more touchless passenger experience."

LAX officials have not released passenger projections for Memorial Day weekend. But the Southern California Automobile Club predicted this month that more than 2.8 million Southern California residents will travel over the vacation weekend, up 64% from last year. Almost 90% of all travelers are expected to make their way to their destinations, but about 9% - about 269,000 people - will fly.

"These vacation numbers are very encouraging and we expect travel will continue to expand as cruises and other options reopen," said Filomena Andre, vice president of the Auto Club for Travel. "Because COVID-19 restrictions vary greatly from location to location and can change quickly, the Auto Club strongly recommends purchasing travel insurance and working with an AAA travel advisor."

According to the Auto Club, top destinations for travelers to Southern California are expected to be Utah's Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, San Diego, and Yosemite National Park.
