WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (DN.M.) introduced Jill Hruby, President Joe Biden's nomination as Undersecretary of State for Energy for Nuclear Safety and Administrator for the National Administration for Nuclear Safety to the Senate Armed Forces Committee (SASC) last week) .

Hruby is a mechanical engineer who joined Sandia National Laboratories as a technical assistant in 1983 and retired in 2017 after a remarkable 34-year career as Laboratories Director. Click to find Hruby's nomination announcement with an expanded bio Here.

The comments prepared for the delivery by Sen. Heinrich:

Chairman Reed and Ranking Member Inhofe, I look forward to welcoming you and the other members of this committee as guests after serving with all of you on the Armed Forces Committee for so many years.

I appreciate if you allow me to say a few words about Jill Hruby, President Biden's nominee for Undersecretary of State for Nuclear Safety and Administrator of the National Administration for Nuclear Safety in the Department of Energy.

I cannot think of anyone better qualified or qualified for this important national security role that ensures the safety and reliability of our nuclear deterrent. And not just because we are both mechanical engineers.

In more than three decades with Sandia National Laboratories, Jill Hruby rose from a position of technical personnel to assuming responsibility for management.

She ended her career at Sandia by becoming the first woman to lead one of our national security laboratories.

She has extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of nuclear weapon systems and component design, nuclear proliferation, defense and homeland security technologies and systems, renewable energies, materials science, engineering, and microsystems technology.

Jill received the Department of Energy's Outstanding Service Award, the National Nuclear Security Administrator's Distinguished Service Gold Award, and the Secretary of Defense for Outstanding Public Service.

She has authored numerous publications and reports, holds three patents, and received an R&D 100 award.

Since stepping down from Sandia in 2017, Jill has been the first Sam Nunn Distinguished Fellow with the Nuclear Threat Initiative.

Jill also served on the Defense Science Board, the National Nuclear Security Administration Advisory Committee on Defense Programs, and the National Academy of Science Committee on International Security and Arms Control.

She frequently participates in international dialogues, is a spokesperson for women in engineering and a mentor for many aspiring executives.

Personally, I've always loved working with Jill when she was a director at Sandia.

I really appreciate your willingness to serve the American people again.

And I hope that all of you on this committee will join me in supporting its affirmation.
