Suez debacle: Insurer delivers update on seized vessel
"Despite the sincere efforts of the Ever Given owners and their insurers, it has not been possible to resolve this matter without the continued involvement of the Egyptian courts."
These were the words of the British P&I Club when the maritime insurer issued an update on the current circumstances surrounding the container ship Ever Given, which had previously been “largely unsupported” due to a demand previously described by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) had been confiscated. valued at $ 916 million.
According to the British P&I Club, which does not insure Ever Given itself and its cargo, but the ship's owner against certain third-party liabilities, the Ever Given camp has appealed against the arrest of the ship to the Ismaili court of first instance in Egypt.
The insurer said the appeal was filed on a number of grounds, including the validity of the arrest in relation to the charge and the alleged lack of evidence to support the SCA's "very significant" claim.
In the meantime, it has been found that 23 of the 25 crew members who were on board at the time the Suez Canal landed remain on board and are assisted by two other seafarers. Ever Given is said to be well looked after, with the crew receiving "every possible assistance" from the shipowner and technical manager, including the opportunity to speak to their families.
"The Ever Given interests will continue to negotiate in good faith with the SCA to find an amicable solution," said the UK P&I Club. "We are encouraged that the SCA recently allowed two of the ship's crew to return home on compassionate grounds while the ship remains in custody."
It added: "The UK club's priority remains the fair and expeditious resolution of the SCA's claim to enable the ship to continue on its planned voyage and allow the crew to leave Egypt."
The appeal will be negotiated on May 4th.
